Silverdale Primary Academy Star in Recycle to Read Short Film

Local academy calls for Hastings community to help children ‘Recycle to Read’ by taking broken toys to Tesco! 

In an exciting development for environmental education, Silverdale Primary Academy welcomed Katy Newnham, founder of Wastebusters into the academy. On Monday, 30 October the pupils took centre stage in a documentary film showcasing ‘Recycle to Read’, an innovative toy reuse and recycling initiative exclusively railed in collaboration with Tesco stories across East and West Sussex.  

The initiative aims to transform broken, hard plastic toys into books and reading rewards for schools across the UK, fostering a culture of reuse and recycle among children. The scheme will be rolled out to further Tesco stores and schools if it proves successful and popular with children, families, and Tesco customers in Sussex.  

Silverdale Primary Academy currently holds a position in the top 10, and as the trial concludes on Monday, 4 December, schools ranked between 5-10 will win £100 worth of vouchers to spend on books, and those in the top 5 will win £200.   

The local community is urged to support the initiative by taking broken, hard plastic toys to the nearest participating Tesco store and placing them in a Recycle to Read collection bin. To earn a Planet Care Point for the academy, simply scan the QR code on the front of the bin, fill out a straightforward form with your email address, and nominate the academy to receive the point.

Principal at Silverdale Primary Academy, Jonathan Morris said, "Transforming broken hard plastic toys into books and reading rewards not only promotes environmental consciousness but also instils the importance of reuse and recycling in children. The project's commitment to education, sustainability, and community collaboration is commendable impacting on both the environment and the education of our children!" 

Donna Barton-Byrne, chair of Silverdale Primary PTA and School Governor said: “What I love most about Recycle to Read is the community side of it. The children get to see something that they’ve once loved and used, can be used again in the future.”
